Haunted Lighthouses – St. Simons Lighthouse

On October 17, 1804, a plantation owner on St. Simons Island, Georgia, deeded four acres of his land at the south end of the island for one dollar to the Federal government for the construction of a lighthouse.
The first lighthouse and a one-story frame residence were built in 1810 at a cost of $13,775. The lighthouse tower stood 85 feet high and was in the shape of an octagonal pyramid. It was 25 feet in diameter at the base and gradually narrowed to 10 feet in diameter at the top. A 10 foot high iron lantern ten feet high rested on top of the tower, and oil lamps were suspended on iron chains in the lantern.
The first keeper was appointed in May 1810 and the tower was lit for the first time. In 1857, a newer, more modern lens was installed and the lighthouse’s power and range were greatly improved.
The light guided mariners in St. Simons Sound for years until the Civil War. During the Civil War, artillery troops and six field guns were stationed at Fort Brown, just west of the lighthouse, to protect St. Simons Sound.
Evenutally, the Confederate troops were forced to evacuate due to an invasion by Federal troops. Before they left, however, they proceeded to blow up the lighthouse to prevent the opposing troops from using it as a navigational aid. For the next ten years, a cotton barn on nearby Retreat Plantation served as a navigational reference for ships entering Brunswick harbor. The tall cotton barn showed up on maps as “King’s Cotton House.”
The U. S. Government ordered the construction of a second lighthouse that was placed west of the first one. The construction consisted of a white, 104-foot tower containing a 129-step cast iron spiral staircase and a two-story brick lighthouse keeper’s dwelling next door.
The construction of the lighthouse brought tragedy, as the head of the construction and some of the crew didn’t live long enough to see their project completed. Stagnant ponds on the island were the perfect breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Many of the men were bitten and infected with malaria and died a year before the construction was finished.
Official records of the lighthouse keeper stated in 1874: “This station is very unhealthy, and it is attributed to the stagnant water in several ponds in the vicinity.” In 1876, the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment performed a complete overhaul of the lighthouse and the light keeper’s house to improve the condition of the buildings.
Originally, the keeper and his family along with the assistant and his family both lived in the keeper’s house. The keeper and his family resided downstairs and the assistant and his family lived upstairs. A central stairway connected the two households. The house was connected to the tower by a room in the keeper’s dwelling.
Around 1910, the building was converted into two apartments with the removal of the central staircase. An exterior staircase, stoop, and door were added on the north side giving access to the second floor. These steps and stoop were removed, the doorway re-bricked, and the central stairway rebuilt during the 1975 rehabilitation.
The lighthouse keeper’s house served as a home for the lighthouse keepers from 1872 until 1950. The lighthouse kerosene lamp was replaced by electricity in 1934. In the summer of 1939, the lighthouse was placed under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1953 the lighthouse was fully automated and the last lighthouse keeper retired.
Stories of the haunting stem from an argument in 1880, between then lighthouse keeper Frederick Osborne and his assistant. Apparently the two men got into a heated argument that ended with a fatal gunshot that left Osborne dead.
The assistant keeper, who was never charged in the case, continued tending the light, although legend says he didn’t seem to be tending it alone. Reportedly, he frequently heard the eerie sound of footsteps at night in the vacant tower.
Through the years, many other people claim to have also heard the sound of the heavy footsteps climbing the tower staircase, including the wives of keepers that tended the light in the years following the murder. Perhaps Osborne has decided to stay around and continue his duties.
In 2004, control of the lighthouse was handed over to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society under the Lighthouse Preservation Act. Today, with the assistance of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the light still serves as a navigational aid to help guide mariners through the dark nights and stormy weather.

A ghost writer is someone who writes any kind of written work for other people. One of the main differences between a regular writer and a ghost writer is that after paying a ghost writer, the client usually retains the copyright of the written work.
A ghost writer is paid to write informative and interesting information that captures the readers’ attention. Some of the kinds of material that a ghost writer may be called upon to write include, resumes, website content, proposals, grants, newsletter, memoirs, novels, speeches and any other type of written work.
If you have a knack or a flair for writing, ghost writing is an exciting career because you are always learning and researching new things. And perhaps the most appealing part about becoming a ghost writer is that you get to make your own hours and work from the comfort of your own home. It’s a great job for stay at home moms or handicapped people. You can write on your own time as long as you finish your projects by the agreed upon deadline. Additionally, depending on your background and experience, ghost writing can also be financially rewarding as well. For example, a professional ghostwriter could get paid 500 dollars or more for an eBook.
A ghost writer finds their projects in many different ways. One way is through online freelance services. Some freelance services where ghost writers can find work include RentAGhostWriter.Com, RentACoder.Com, Guru.Com and Elance.Com. These sites are services where potential clients can post jobs for freelancers.
There are many sites like these where you can go to find work, however, keep in mind that there is usually a monthly fee you must pay to get jobs. Of the sites mentioned above, the only site, that doesn’t charge a fee, is rentaghostwriter.com.
Another way to find ghost writing jobs is by conducting a thorough search of companies through online search engines. Additionally, you can join forums and chat rooms where ghost writers hangout and get referrals for reputable companies or sites that hire ghost writers.
Another great benefit of becoming a ghost writer is whether the clients or companies are based in the US, Europe or Asia, you can communicate with them via email and get paid via check, money transfer, E-gold or Paypal. With a computer and an Internet connection, you are sure to succeed as a ghost writer.
Having a portfolio of your work before you start freelancing is an excellent idea because it shows that you are a professional. You may also want to take some occasional online writing classes to keep you learning new ways to write better.
Before accepting a job, be clear about how you will be paid and the deadline for the project. If there is no contract provided, a good ghost writer should always create an informal contract describing the project, due date, fees, etc.
Additionally, you should never take on more work than you can handle. Taking on too many projects at a time can lead to missed deadlines and dissatisfied customers which, can lead to a bad reputation.
Finally, the work that a ghost writer submits should always be unique and creative. As a ghost writer you should NEVER plagiarize. Moreover, you should always spell check your work and make sure it sounds professional.
Haunted Houses and the Infamy of JSB

When I was in fourth grade I found a book of Halloween poetry titled "The Haunted House." Its title poem was by Victoria Crume, and it's stayed with me these many years. When I was a grade schooler, it was a great deal more unsettling. But even now, it's still a lot of fun. The so-called "mood music" is JS Bach's infamous Toccata in d-minor. Yes, that one. It is rather inexpertly played upon two Casio keyboards coupled together with a Radio Shack MIDI cable and a prayer. Yes, it's corny and …

Ghost Hunting Should Be Professional

Ghost Hunting can be very fun and yet at times it can be one of the most terrifying things you will probably ever do in your life.
The following are just a few of the things folks have encountered during ghost hunting or paranormal investigations:
Smells: These smells can seem to come from no where, and develop instantly and disappear just as fast. The smells are often putrid like rotted meat, or like fresh bowel movements, and are very overpowering at times.
Apparitions: Some spirits appear as barely visible forms, while some become as solid and normal looking as a living person.
Clouds – Mists – Masses: Often fleeting shadows, things seen out of the corners of the eyes are encountered. Or a rolling black mass may appear, sometimes a whispy form like smoke is seen.
Disembodied voices: These are often heard and at times they can be very scary. Imagine being in a darkened room, and having something invisible whisper or even shout in your ear. These are not EVP’s, but normal sounding speech.
Physical Sensations – Some ghost hunters have been touched, pinched, slapped, had their hair pulled, been scratched or even bitten by invisible entities.
Rappings – Scratching – and Knockings: In walls, ceilings and floors. Strange sounds and noises are often heard in haunted locations, as well as hearing what sounds like objects being dropped, or moved in nearby rooms.
Cold spots: Sometimes just before a spirit manifests they draw energy from the surroundings. Often a spot in one area of a room will suddenly become very cold. For example the temperature thoughout a room may average 75 degrees but in one corner or area, the temperature will suddenly plummet to 50 degrees or even colder. This is a sure sign of a spirits presence or a soon manifestation.
Power drains and equipment malfunctions: Like cold spots, when a spirit is drawing energy needed to become solid or more visible, they will often draw-in nearby energy, this energy can also come from batteries in video camers, and other devices. Often cameras, tape recorders, even lights will suddenly go haywire or stop working all together when a spirit is present.
Almost everyone that does ghost hunting believes that there are two types of spirits, human and in-human, the latter are also called demons. I am a born again christian and believe the bible 100%. From my beliefs in the bible as factual. I believe there is only one type of spirit involved in any haunting, and these are in-human or demons.
According to the bible, when we are dead our spirits or souls are present with God, from there we are either granted a life of love and peace in heaven with the creator and the other believers, or we are cast into hell forever, with no chance of escape. The bible also says there is a huge chasm or void that separates the living from the dead, they cannot cross over or communicate with each other. There are other statements in the bible that clearly says that ghosts can not be the spirits or souls of people who have died.
Whether the creatures involved in a haunting are spirits of dead humans or whether they are demons, if one is trying to prove that they truly exist or if you are trying to disprove a haunting, then you must do paranormal investigations as a professional.
A professional Ghost Hunter or paranormal investigator needs to have the right tools. Here I will explain devices that every ghost hunter or paranormal investigator MUST have, if he or she is truly taking the phenomenon as real or as a business, and not as a joke.
Voice Recorder: It doesn’t matter if you use a standard tape recorder or one of the new digital recorders, what does matter is the quality and the ability to use an external microphone. Try to get one that is of good quality, but make sure you get one that has a plug in microphone with a cable or cord so the end of the microphone is away from the recorder. The small all-in-one recorders that have the built in microphones, pick up a lot of the hiss and gear noise from the recorder when they are in record mode. A recorder is a necessity for recording EVP’s. EVP’s also called (electronic voice phenomenom) are a very unique and sometimes frightening thing that is often encountered in a haunted area. What an EVP is, is a voice or other communication that is heard on a tape or digital recorder during playback, that was not heard when the recorder was recording.
Film Camera: Do NOT use a digital camera because the photo will always be questioned as being fake, no matter how good it is, where if you use a film camera, you at least have the negatives as some proof. And unless you buy a high mega-pixel digital camera, the photo quality will be less than a nice cheap 35mm film camera.
Camcorder: A camera is good, but a camcorder is even better. Get one that uses a tape, either the small cassettes or one of the older models that use the full sized VHS tapes. I bought two of these older camcorders for under $75 each recently.
Thermal Imaging scopes or goggles: These capture the upper portion of the infrared light spectrum, which is emitted as heat by objects instead of simply reflected as light. Hotter objects, such as warm bodies, emit more of this light than cooler objects like trees or buildings. Often spirits that manifest have a temperature in their form that stands out in this spectrum, especially if a spirit is present in a cold location.
Night Vision scopes or goggles: These little devices have become very cheap, a nice night vision scope can now be purchased easily for under $200. They work by collecting the tiny amounts of light, including the lower portion of the infrared light spectrum, that are present but may be imperceptible to our eyes, and amplifying it to the point that we can easily observe the image.
Flashlight: Take along two small pocket ones for each team member. What can be worse then exploring a dark cellar or underground area, and having the lights or another flashlight fail.
Walkie Talkies: If you have a group of team members, and you are investigating a large location, walkie talkies are not just a good thing to have, but they can be a life saver at times.
Notebook and pencils: Often any electronic, electrical or other devices may fail in a haunted location, so it’s very wise to carry along a small notebook and some pencils in case you need to keep some valuable notes.
Thermal Scanner: A hand held thermal scanner (thermometer) uses infrared technology to measure the surface temperature of material without touching it. You simply point at your target, pull the trigger and read the temperature on the lit LCD display.
One of the best tools I recommend, is also the cheapest, under $10 U.S. It is a computer software program that is made just for Ghost Hunting and Paranormal Investigations. It’s called ‘Ghost Hunter’. The software is for anyone who explores haunted houses or locations where any type of paranormal activity is occurring. Whether you are trying to gather evidence of the haunting or other proof, this software can help make the job more organized and easier.
Ghost Hunter software was made as a scientific tool, for paranormal researchers that believe in spirits, demons, or ghosts. Researchers can easily keep track of vital data gathered at the haunted locations. With this software you can know at a glance such vital information as; the date and times of the activity, location info, GPS data, telephone numbers, notes, sounds heard, odors detected, temperature anomalies, and more.
You can use the software on location during the investigation with any WINDOWS based notebook Computer or back at home or in the office after the investigation.
For more information and the ability to download and try a free demo version of the ‘Ghost Hunter’ software, please visit the website:

Supernatural Creator Talks About Going Up Against ‘lost’
June 24, 2009 by Winchester
Fans would be happy to know that the demon slaying Winchester brothers are back, with Supernatural airing its four all-new episodes starting tomorrow night at 9pm. Eric Kripke recently had a conversation with Kristin at E!Online, and he shared his thoughts on the Bela and Ruby controversy, how he feels about going up against Lost and the chances of Supernatural being granted another season. Moreover, this week’s episode of Supernatural entitled “Malleus Maleficarum” will deal with the good old witches and monsters, and a little insight on the mysterious Ruby (Katie Cassidy).
About Supernatural having another season, creator Eric Kripke said, “We always feel like we’re a bubble show. We always feel that the sword of Damocles is kind of dangling over our heads. And that’s why we’re so fervent about getting the word out with fans. The fate of the show lies in their hands more than anybody else’s. You know, they have to continue to spread the word, they have to continue to let their friends know, because the main thing that determines whether we’re back is just viewers. Pure and simple.”
As for Supernatural having to compete with Lost, Kripke isn’t happy at all about the idea, but has been putting in all he can to “get as much promo time as possible.”
Kripke also talked about Bela (Lauren Cohan) and Ruby, the two female characters who were not wholeheartedly welcomed by most fans.
“I’m not surprised the fans are responding this way,” Kripke said of the strong fan base. “because they tend to be very passionate about the show, and God love them for it. And they tend to have very strong opinions, specifically on the females we bring on to the show.”
As for their previous female addition Jo, played by Alona Tal, they retracted her from the show because they thought that the character wasn’t well developed, despite Tal being a great actress. Nonetheless, this time they have two new female actresses who still have to prove their worth to the audiences.
Supernatural may have a hard time in competing with Lost, but rest assured that the fans would do their part in spreading the word, and keeping Supernatural afloat.
