What is a ghost? – Part 3

You saw it, and you know that you saw it. However, few believe you. They tell you that you have been working too hard, or the light was dim, or you just wanted to see something so you saw something. Regardless, you know that you saw it. What exactly did you see? You describe it as an almost transparent being, without real substance, in other words, a “ghost.”

Regardless of the skeptics, many people do accept the existence of ghosts. What exactly, though, is a ghost? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ghost as “a disembodied soul.” I would expand that definition by stating that a ghost is a disembodied soul that does not know it is dead. For most people, at the time of death, the soul departs from life assured about what path it is to take and looking expectantly to what lies ahead. However, sometimes a soul does not leave but continues to dwell among the living. Why does this occur?

Some people are too entwined with earth to detach, and they miss the signs that tell them to move on their way. They are confused. There are others who feel that there is business here that they did not finish, or someone they feel they must protect. Whatever the reason, these souls are not to be feared. Instead, they need help to continue on their way.

I myself have seen ghosts many times. One of the most memorable was a ghost I encountered at the ruins of an old school in Oklahoma. The site of the ruins of this school is in a very picturesque, wooded area. I saw a young girl standing by a tree one day while I was there. I could see her so clearly that at first I did not realize she was a ghost. She told me her name was Mary Beth. It was clear as I talked to her that she saw the school as it when she was enrolled there as she talked about three buildings, and only the ruins of one building were visible. Also, she talked about her birthday next week and told me the date, November 13th. The only problem is that it was summer when we had this conversation. From that information, I realized that she must have died in November (I did not know which year), a week before her birthday.

I asked her if she had ever been in an accident at the school. She told me about a wagon that came to the school with some barrels of apples, and one of the barrels had fallen off the wagon and hit her. I realized that this event had actually probably led to her death, but she was unaware of this. While she had attended this school, she evidently waited for her brother, David, each day to take her

What makes a great ghost story? – Part 4

What makes a great ghost story you may ask? I say a great ghost story needs thrill, excitement. It needs to be fun and entertaining. It needs to have more than one person, it needs to have many people, being haunted by one or more ghosts! It needs all the fun things about Halloween like fun and games, music and trick-or-treating, kids having fun. A great ghost story needs witches and wizards, eye of newt and frogs, it needs all the fun things that most of us were once, and still might be scared of. And most of all, a ghost story needs a really scary ghost that can do things that you just make up from the top of your imagination. A ghost should be on the earth for a good reason, not a silly reason like because it wants to sit in front of th TV or because it wants to play games, a reason that would actually bring a real ghost back to our world. In my opinion, ghost stories don’t have to be scary, they have to be about fun and Halloween, and trick-or-treating. Halloween doesn’t need to be scary, ghost stories don’t need to be scary, they both just need to be fun. It needs to have laughs and crys, scared and sad moments, and if you are going to spend your Halloween like this, do it with friends who care and love you.

Ghost Hunting 101

Do you hear bumps in the night? Does your hair stand on end when you walk into a room? Maybe you feel as if someone is watching you or perhaps you think you see someone out the corner of your eye, but when you turn to look no one is there? What you may be encountering in those unsettling moments is a ghost. So before you go running out of your house screaming, let’s take a moment to talk about ghostly encounters and those that investigate this phenomena.

A ghost is believed to be the spirit or soul of a person who has remained on Earth after death. When a ghost has taken up residence in a location, it is referred to as a haunting. There are two different ways in which a ghost inhabits a location. The most common type of haunting is a residual haunting. A residual haunting is typified by ghostly energy that is static or goes through a number of movements over and over again. It can be likened to watching a movie clip that repeats itself or a record album that has a skip in it, causing the needle to jump back to an earlier point on the album and begin again.

The second classification of haunting is the classic haunting. In a classic haunting the ghost displays intelligence and interacts with the people in the environment. It is not uncommon during a classic haunting for items to be moved around, for lights or electrical appliances to turn on and off, to hear voices our sounds out of nowhere or to be touched, tickled, stroked or even shoved. These ghosts often reflect the personality of an individual, even after their death. With this type of haunting, the aroma of flowers, perfume, cigarette smoke or other scents that are associated with the individual are often detected.

So whether you think you are being haunted by a ghost and want to have a group of trained professionals to come to your home or are interested in investigating all that goes bump in the night, but don’t know where to begin, here’s some information that can help you get started.

It is held that ghosts are electro-magnetic in origin and they create these fields when trying to manifest into this dimension. The energy that is given off by a ghost causes disruptions in the locations magnetic field, thus making it detectable by specialized equipment and psychics alike.

Because the presence of a ghost can be detected by specific types of equipment, a ghost hunter can become well equipped with a number of affordable pieces of equipment, many of which you may already own. From basic to advanced, there are many different types of equipment you can use to detect an otherworldly presence. For someone thinking about participating in an investigation, this doesn’t mean you have to own every piece of equipment in order to perform a reliable investigation. It does mean that you should at least possess a basic set of tools to use.

Basic Equipment

35mm or Digital Camera For a beginner, having a camera is probably the easiest and least expensive way to begin. Pictures, whether digital or recorded on film can capture paranormal activity, activity that is often invisible to the naked eye. This is especially true in the case of documenting the presence of orbs and ectoplasm.

Notebook & Pen or Pencil Simple as this may be, it is always a good idea to have something to record any notes, findings or experiences you may have during an investigation.

Flashlight Many times an investigation will take you to a dark or foreboding location such as a cemetery, old warehouse, abandoned building or other place that is dark or without electricity. In these instances you will need to have a portable light source.

Extra Batteries Depending on the paranormal activity of a location, batteries oftentimes will mysteriously and unexpectedly lose their charge leaving you in the dark. Regardless of the type of equipment you use, make sure you bring extra batteries along to replenish depleted ones.

Intermediate Equipment

EMF Detector The Electromagnetic Field Detector is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment to own if you are serious about doing an investigation. In addition to detecting the energy fields of ghosts, it is a key tool to use when taking baseline readings of a site. A baseline reading is a preliminary evaluation of a location, where investigators identify any existing or man made electromagnetic fields such as those created by power lines or electrical appliances.

Digital Video Camera Video cameras can be a useful investigation tool. Unlike still cameras, a video camera will document any activity in its entirety including the length of time the phenomena occurs, the surrounding conditions, as well as the phenomena itself. A tripod to rest the video camera on is also helpful, especially if it is going to be left in a stationary position to record the activity in a specific location.

Tape Recorder with an External Microphone There is no better way to capture EVP’s (electronic voice phenomena) than through the use of a tape recorder. Whether using a traditional tape recorder with high quality tapes or a digital recorder, an external microphone should always be used. A detached mic will eliminate the sounds of internal gears and turning wheels that can contaminate your recording.

Advanced Equipment

Motion Detectors Motion detectors can be used to sense the movement of unseen forces. Many need to be plugged in to an outlet, but battery operated ones are also available. Before you go out and buy one, decide which type will best support you investigatory needs.

Thermal Scanner A thermal scanner or non-contact thermometer can be used to detect rapid temperature changes. A change of ten degrees or more from the ambient temperature (the temperature of the surrounding area) can indicate an ethereal presence.

Psychics As An Investigative Tool

In addition to tools such as cameras, meters and gauges that are used by ghost hunters, many groups also utilize the services of trained psychics as a means of gathering information about a site. This is the role I play when working with ghost hunting groups.

Finding a true psychic to work with can be a real asset to the quality of your investigation. They can play an invaluable role in supporting the efforts of any paranormal investigation. Like a good piece of equipment, a psychic can help to detect anomalies as well as provide additional insights into the nature of activity encountered.

If your group decides to include the use of a psychic as part of the investigation team, there are a few items that should be considered. To maximize the objectivity of the investigation, it is critical that the psychic go into a location “cold”. This means that they do not know the details of the location or of any activity that may have been encountered by other members or the property owner. Telling the psychic the history of a property can cause the individual to become “contaminated”, which can make it difficult for them to differentiate what they perceive from what they have been told.

Conducting An Investigation

With at least a basic kit of equipment in hand, you are now ready to explore the world of paranormal phenomena. Before you begin, there are a few ground rules to consider. First, never go on an investigation alone, in addition to personal safety, you never know what may happen. Next, consider the fact that ghost hunting groups are often judged by their behavior and professionalism so always try to be respectful of the people, places and situations you may encounter.

To do an investigation, the first step is to select a location. Locations can include cemeteries, old buildings, historic sites, private homes and businesses. Always get permission to be on a site. This will keep you from getting in trouble for trespassing. Before you begin a formal investigation it is a good idea to do some research on the site. Talk to the owner, check out old newspapers, or contact the local historic society to see if anything happened there in the past. It is also a good idea to evaluate the terrain for potential hazards or/or to identify places where you can setup stationary video cameras, motion detectors or tape recorders.

Most investigations occur after dark, between the hours of 9pm and 6am. These hours are considered the “psychic hours” and are believed to be the best time to record paranormal activity.

When you get to the selected location, walk around to get a feel for it. Next, set up any stationary equipment and take baseline readings of the site. Then let the investigation begin. Take pictures, shoot video, record for EVP and take meter readings. Take them everywhere and anywhere, especially if you feel something or get a reading on another piece of equipment. When you are done walking around a site, turn your stationary equipment on and let it run while you and your group are out of the area.

When you have finished collecting your data, it is time for analysis. Here each picture, video and tape is reviewed for evidence of a haunting. This is probably the most important part of any investigation. As you review your materials, be skeptical. Look for earthly causes of any phenomena. Was someone smoking in the area? Was the room or location dusty? Where there reflective surfaces that could be the cause of the anomaly in your image? It is important to make sure your evidence will stand up to scrutiny by eliminating any other explanations. This will give your data more credibility.

As you pore over your data, what you will find is that not every location you go to will have ghostly activity. You may discover that many of the things you initially detected during your investigation actually have real world explanations as opposed to supernatural ones. What keeps many ghost hunters going is that one-in-five chance that this investigation will be the “real” thing.

When your analysis is done, presenting your finding to the home or property owner or sharing your results with others is often done. Many groups also post the results of their investigations on their group’s website, thus share the outcome of their investigation with the rest of the world.

If you are interested in ghost hunting or think your have a ghost hanging around in your local, there is a plethora of information available on the worldwide web. Here you can find articles about ghost hunting in general, stories of other people’s ghostly encounters, places that sell ghost hunting equipment and even sites hosted by ghost hunting groups in your geographic area.

So if you think you are hearing bumps in the night, don’t be afraid it just might be a ghost!

7 Reasons……. why many angelic encounters occur this way!

In a good mystery story, the villain’s identity remains hidden ‘til the end. So it is with angels who many times come in disguise, do a rescue, smile, walk way and vaporize into thin air.

There are 7 simple reasons why many angelic encounters occur this way.

1. As supernatural beings, the same laws do not govern them.

2. We think less kindly of them because they are so different. Who wants to brag                        about doing business with a weird, mystical, ghostlike person?

3. We are generally uncomfortable around awesome and glorious messengers.

4. They just don’t look like what you see portrayed in books. A winged what?

5. Sometimes you don’t even see them at all.

6. If you were going through a difficult time and you got merciful attention and                              guidance you don’t really like drawing a lot of outside attention to yourself.

7. Let’s face it, seeing an angel comes with a certain amount of discomfort in                              the associated culture shock.

1. As supernatural beings, the same laws do not govern them.
How else could they appear in a locked room? or And as I said unto you, as they were going about rebelling against God, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto them; and he descended as it were in a cloud; and he spake as it were with a voice of thunder, which caused the earth to shake upon which they stood from Mosiah 27: 11; or shakes you out of your sleep, or vaporizes when he is done.

2. We think less kindly of them because they are so different. Who wants to brag about doing business with a weird, mystical, ghostlike person? It doesn’t matter that angels use multi-media in their presentations to reason with people and to teach. Just try explaining to anyone anything you learned from an angel.

3. We are generally uncomfortable around awesome and glorious messengers
. That’s why they usually start out by telling us not to be afraid. They know that even in their best disguise it is frightening just to be around them. It is great to be saved, protected and comforted if they just weren’t so awesome.

4. They just don’t look like what you see portrayed in books. A winged what? Some angels walk among us, one may carry a fishing reel or a briefcase, go by the name Johnny, Jill or Mark Angeli, mom or dad, brother or sister, or husband or wife. When you have a problem, they have a solution even if it isn’t the way we think it should be. They rarely identify themselves as an angel of any kind. They prefer the glory to be their Boss’.

5. Sometimes you don’t even see them at all.
Most times, they’re probably invisible, conducting their work trans-dimensionally or remotely. Who can be afraid of something they don’t see? Angels love whispering secrets and whistling in the dark… Angels are the guardians of hope and wonder, the keepers of magic and dreams…

6. If you were going through a difficult time and you got merciful attention and guidance you don’t really like drawing a lot of outside attention to yourself
. Angels know “love” is the only four-letter word…and apply it in all its variations and are pure of heart. Angels watch over you, are always present, often showing us the right way of doing or saying things.

7. Let’s face it, seeing an angel comes with a certain amount of discomfort in the associated culture shock. If it isn’t fear or guilt then we have to put it down to feeling strange around weird happenings. I would guess that if seeing an angel were an everyday thing then there wouldn’t be any shock at all. If we busied ourselves doing good things then someday we might also discover that we are all “angels in training; all we have to do is open our wings and fly...”

Hauntings: a Paranormal Perspective

April 15, 2009 by Winchester

If we searched for the meaning of paranormal we would find reference to psychic sense, telekinesis, Near death experiences, and many others. Paranormal basically means that which stretches beyond our normal realm of understanding. It is a phenomena that can not be classified with any scientific methods nor has clear cut answers that can be logically concluded.

In the class of paranormal or super natural comes the term of haunting. The term instantly draws up images of “ghosts” . Long stereo typed as a passed soul so unsettled they wander the earth in sheets or chains bellowing boo at every living person they came into contact with. The ideas of ghost or haunting has matured over time and moved past a lot of these stereo typical images , although still very much misunderstood, an openness has invented a need to further explore this realm of the Haunted.

There are several classifications of hauntings that most commonly known ghostly like disturbances fall under. They are in no means the infinite answers, as paranormal itself is still something that holds not any proven answer as it is defined. So we need to keep ourselves open to not having all the answers. I am going to give a brief overview of the currently common known types of hauntings, and how they manifest.

1. Residual energy or memory hauntings.

These types of hauntings appear to be repeats of events, memories that seem to be carried out in an almost scripted type reaction. Like playing a movie over and over again. This type of haunting usually involves a repeat of the same type of activity on a regular basis. The most common type of haunting, does not usually involve an actual spirit or ghost. It is believed to be energy from some type of event, usually significant in ones life that becomes imbedded in its surroundings of that time. Perhaps tragedy or even that of great joy can become so strong in its energy that it builds a “life” of its own. Like a tape player the event plays out over and over again.

2. Human or intelligent haunting

I use human loosely as this can also involve any once living creature. These types of hauntings are able to show some sort of communication in real time. It is believed to be a spirit or intelligence that is still aware of what is going on in the current surroundings and time. They often make responses to communication, or disruptions in their environment. Some classify this type of haunt as uncrossed spirit, or trapped. I would not make an assumption that this is always the case. Some records of ghostly intelligent hauntings have shown to be a communication of some type of warning or a message of hope to those left behind. Like the use of a medium in relaying that message, not all intelligent classified hauntings are seeking our help, they may be their to try to help. In terms for our topic though, these actual intelligent hauntings you would find to be able to communicate in some form and not sticking to one particular routine as in a residual haunting.

3. Poltergeist or noisy ghost

These types of haunting seem to lead more to the belief that they are either an attachment to a living being or an actual manifestation by a living being. In most cases of poltergeist activity objects move, and things are disturbed in a focus around a particular individual. The common ingredient is usually an adolescent, female is the most the most common. Some link this type of paranormal phenomena to the mind of a disturbed living being, either suffering from depression, rage or even possibly abuse. Another angle on this leads to the next type of haunting as a entity or ghost may attach to somebody fitting this criteria as a means of feeding off their energy or using it to aid in their own manifestations.

4. Inhuman or “demonic” haunting

I will touch this type of haunting from an outward pre defined perspective , I do not fully agree or disagree with the way this is described or referred. In general terms of haunting , as something that disturbs or disrupts the “norm” this type of haunting is classified as primarily malevolent. Like an intelligent haunting, this haunting involves the presence of something with intelligence but the difference is in the belief that this type of intelligence has never been in human form. Often associated with things that are summoned, as with a Ouija board or other dimensional tool, this type of haunting usually begins as harmless play and grows increasingly more frightful. It is believed this inhuman entity is usually angry, or holds hatred for human life, and seeks to cause harm , physically and emotionally through fear. These types of hauntings can appear as some class as a demonic form, resembling a “devil”. They can link to such things as the ideas of possession.

5. Nature Spirits

This may or not be felt it belongs in hauntings at all but I think it is a part that is rarely addressed and needs to be looked at. Nature spirits like the last type, are not what is classed as ever being human. A highly intelligent haunting that is rarely seen and little known about. Nature spirits fit’s a wide range of beings looked at as something from a fairytale or a child’s imagination. In the case of haunting again as a frightful type happening, these nature spirits are usually associated with a particular area as a form of guardian or caretaker. They seem to dwell in certain places frightening those who try to enter their “sacred” spaces. This is a general classification, as sometimes these nature spirits depending on their type may fit as well in the inhuman type haunting and attach for no known reason or origin to certain place, person at any given time. However in most cases the presence of a natural spirit is linked to a place having some type of historical or sacred significance in common folklore. Common types of nature spirits include, fairies, sylphs, elves, gnomes and even trolls to name just a few.

There are probably more classifications out there that can be parts of these types of hauntings or separate all on their own. This is in general how hauntings are classed. In perspective, as a sensitive, this may not be how I see everything or have experienced. I do hope it opens a door for communication and perhaps a deeper research independantly or jointly with groups.
