TV show reviews: Supernatural – Part 5

The supernatural has captured the imaginations of thousands upon thousands of people for generations. We have sat through horror movies, both good & bad, scared ourselves silly with books written by the likes of Stephan King & religiously watched shows such as The X-Files & Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But never has a show captured such a wide & diverse audience as much as The CW’s Supernatural, starring Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki as Dean & Sam Winchester, demon hunters, brothers & heroes.

Together our “boys” travel the country in Dean’s 1967 Chevy Impala, searching for & killing every evil entity they can find. It is an unpaid & sometimes thankless job but one they have dedicated their lives to.

Through their horror, angst, fearlessness & humor we have watched these two characters develop over the last two seasons into something larger than life & we await anxiously for the third upcoming season to see them continue their journey. Will Sam go dark-side? Will Dean get out of his deal that gives him only one year to live? These are just some of the things that keep fans on the edge of their seats & practically living at hundreds of various websites on the Internet while the show is on hiatus.

Eric Kripke, creator extrordinaire & known to fans as God, has put together an extremely talented cast & crew. Everyone from the gorgeous & very talented actors to the catering crew throw themselves into this project 110%.

Are there goof ups? Of course, they are only human after all, but they are far & few between & mostly unnoticeable.

Jensen Ackles has gone from daytime soap star to hot Hollywood hunk in a matter of a few short years, but most impressively is he has the talent to back him up, whether he is turning on the charm or slowly peeling away the layers of his character he is totally believable, he IS Dean Winchester.

Jared Padalecki has grown enormously as an actor since the first episode & continues to improve as his character evolves, there is no doubt in my mind he was meant to be Sam.

Supernatural is the Gem in The CW’s lineup & deserves the high praises & fan devotion it receives, but more importantly it deserves a lot more advertising than The CW currently gives it.

So if you are yet to watch this unbelievably good show, then I suggest you take some time out of your daily grind & get lost in the world of the Supernatural, you won’t be disappointed.

New Supernatural Comic Book Series Starting in April

The Supernatural fan base is undeniably strong, and they serve as a good market for publishing companies who would like to release material on the Supernatural series. In fact, WildStorm released Supernatural: Origins comic book last year, and it was a fair success. This year, fans will again delight in another release, as Supernatural: Rising Son is coming soon. The new comic book is a six-issue miniseries that will tell another tale about the Winchester brothers. To be released on April 23, the series will follow a 7-year-old Sam and 11-year-old Dean as they travel with their father, John.

Writer Peter Johnson, who is also a co-executive producer on the TV show explained that this series focuses more on John and his dysfunctional family.

“We’re really going to explore the differences between Sam and Dean in this one,” Johnson added. “Dean is becoming aware of what his dad’s up to and we’ll see him training and hunting a little bit, while John will start to key in on something different about Sam.”

Despite being another Supernatural project, show creator Eric Kripke, who contributed hugely to the Origins project, was not present in any way in Rising Son, mostly due to the writers’ strike. Although the strike does not include comic book writers, Kripke saw the thin line between writing for the TV series and writing a comic book based on the series, and thus opted to not be part of it this time.

Johnson added that this action packed series includes familiar faces, creepier monsters, fighter chicks and a villain that may be part of the show itself. This will be one hell of a comic book for Supernatural fans to look out for, and just to add to the excitement, there is a third comic book in its conception stage. As for now, let’s await the release of Supernatural, Rising Son, on April 23.

Supernatural: Cohan and Cassidy’s Cuties

The upcoming season of the CW network’s paranormal action drama Supernatural is set to introduce a pair of new cast members, strong female characters who will potentially act as a foil to the Winchester brothers. Actresses Lauren Cohan and Kate Cassidy gamely spoke up in an interview with IGN about the women they’re set to play, who have been described as both intense and seductive. Cohan was born in Philadelphia, and she described her character of Bela as a female version of the iconic detective Humphrey Bogart. She added that her character was not inclined to take the life of anyone, but this was mainly due to practical reasons.

But on the other hand, Bela is also capable of killing when she truly has to and there’s no other alternative. To portray the character and her deadly talents, Cohan was given a regimen of weapons training, learning the art of stage combat with swords and numerous other “sharp instruments,” as she calls them. As a contrast, Cassidy stated that her own character of Ruby was both manipulative and slightly obsessed with being in control. Though just like Cohan, she also underwent training for weaponry and performing combat, especially with swords.

When initial word of the new characters came out, many speculated that they would be love interests for the Winchester brothers. However, the show’s executive producer Eric Kripke stated that they were actually going to be antagonistic instead, and bringing a modicum of conflict into the mix. He did not leave out the possibility of romantic chemistry and sparks flying among men and the women, however. Though despite the fan controversy and hype, the concept of demon-hunting with the presence of attractive babes is nothing new to pop culture. One need only check out the Capcom video game series Devil May Cry, especially its own spin-off anime show which debuted this year, to see how it ought to be done.
