My husband lived in an old house in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, England. He was about 3 years old when his mother discovered that he use to sit up and talk to the ghost in the night and he had no memory of it the next day. He would have conversations with her. They called her Phyllis. She use to close and shut doors and would hide things away from the family. She did all sorts. One of the doors use to squeak and the council fixed it and Phyllis was not pleased and was quiet for a while. The family loved the house as the boys use to have the attic and the girls were in the other bedrooms as there were seven children all together.

The council had decided to demolished all the houses as they would take a lot of money to be done up as the council said. The people who lived in the houses were not pleased at all but the council had built some new houses and they had to live there. However, if the truth was out really the council wanted to split the tight community up as there were several houses and they formed like a square, so everyone use to call it the square. They all looked after each other. They borrowed each others washer and helped each other if the needed coal and things like that. They all looked after each other when the police use to call. They would never let the police tackle anyone in the square with out all of them being there to protect the person in question. That is what I mean about it being a tight community.

Anyhow, Phyllis was angry and things started to move around and was not pleased at all. The family had to move and so did Phyllis. Phyllis grew attached to Ian and what ever the house he moved to she use to follow him. When Ian and I met she made herself known and she use to pinch my bottom or she use to hide things away. I use to ask her to bring it back and she did. We liked each other which was a blessing as Ian and I got married. When we did get married, Phyllis moved in with us.

Ian use to smoke and she hide his cigarettes a lot. She use to like music and then lit up the stereo and put out the CD. She wanted music. I had trouble getting a top off the jar of pickles and I came into the room to ask Ian if he would take it off for me. As I entered back into the kitchen the top flew off the jar. I chuckled and said thank you. She also switches the telly over too and put on a dvd. It would be playing when we came into the house even if no one had been in. If Ian had shouted at us she use to and still does hide things

“I do believe in spooks! I do I do I do!”

-The Cowardly Lion

I have always believed in ghosts, seeing apparitions of everything from my grandmother’s cat, snowball, to my mother’s living spirit standing in my doorway checking on me in the dead of night. From the time I could explore library shelves on my own, I was checking out books about ghosts. I didn’t have any need for fantasy, discarding the old standbys of Nancy Drew, who I saw as being a dry goody two-shoes type, and the Hardy Boys, who always found a living person behind the mysteries. “What a crock!” I thought. There had to be more than the sickly sweet endings, I wanted the truth. I wanted to know what happened in a real haunting, a real mystery to sink my teeth into. I learned about The Bell Witch at 8 years old, becoming fascinated with poltergeists. Thrilled and equally terrified, I read everything Hans Holtzer wrote, rousing to the ghosts of the English countryside and documented accounts of true ghost stories from all over the world. Before the days of cable television and the Discovery Channel, I watched every episode of “In Search Of” wide-eyed as Leonard Nimoy narrated the exotic tales of families plagued with spirits.

It was always Halloween in my head, and I wanted as much information as I could find. I read the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe, classic tales by Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte. Later, I would find the mastery of Stephen King, anything and everything to do with ghosts. Ghosts were always presented as something other than human, never a former human. Ghosts were something to be dealt with, not understood and assisted. So many tales were about demonic entities, frightening and malevolent, but I still craved the knowledge of the story behind the events. I wanted to know who the ghosts were; I wanted to hear their stories and not just the translation by the ghost hunter. Couldn’t someone find the truth? Couldn’t we help them? What would keep us from becoming a ghost ourselves? I began asking these questions before I was 10 years old, and I did not begin finding answers until I was in my early 20’s.

Because of my otherworldly interests, I don’t think I ever embraced traditional religious ideology. I saw the existence of ghosts to be proof of a greater force than mankind, but I couldn’t see where religion explained why there were so many earthbound spirits. I was raised Baptist, and we even went to church on a regular basis, but nothing there seemed to satisfy my desire for

Paranormal Investigator or Ghost Hunter?

This question is not a rhetorical one. By the end of this article there will be answer: there has to be. Once again, we are outgrowing ourselves and morphing in to various ideological “camps” if you will. Where there are camps, there are tribes, where there are tribes you have variances in culture and where there are variances in culture there will undoubtedly be disputes: warfare even.

It has been my experience that the underlying cause of most all bloodshed, with regard to the world of ideas, is people thinking they think alike but the frustration are the dichotomous outcomes. So kill the other party and I will be right by virtue of the fact that I am the only one left to “herald’ a particular idea. Cool.

May I say that there is exponentially a better solution? Since the outcomes of like ideas are different we must agree that these ideas are not so “like” – what we perceive as similarities are only that faulty perceptions. The litmus test is the outcome itself. If the outcome is different so are the ideologies that spawned them. This is a basic logical tenet that is commonly overlooked.

O.K. brass tacks time. Definitions. It seems we (human beings) need to define our existence using language. We throw out words to the winds and await their definition as given back to us by time, culture, trend. Example: rainbow (admittedly not the same cultural icon that Dorothy had in mind in the Wizard of Oz, oh and “Oz” itself love those full of testosterone-prison-bait-shiv scenes), gay (happiness?), joint, (no longer a member of the body) well you get the idea.

It is now time to catch the words “ghost hunter” and “paranormal investigator” as the cultural wind blows them back within our grasp. When Jason and Grant (I have the utmost respect for the courage these two gentlemen had to grandfather the beginnings of the paranormal in the “media world”) were, I am sure, sort of coerced into doing “GHOST HUNTERS”; they were exploring a cultural territory that only those in truly covert cult fashion perused. This idea of “paranormal investigation” grew in the popular mind through these televised programs. Within a short period of time, because of the media, “ghost hunting” has become a household word. This was considered an evolutionary step in definition. These “Ghost Hunters” did NOT want to be known as “Ghost Busters”. This definition had already become

Ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night have been one of the worlds greatest mysteries. As we try to feign our mortality we are constantly seeking proof of life after death, and ghost hunting has become almost as popular as any other sport.

Do ghosts exist? Maybe, but there are too many examples of incidents that show some tangible form of proof of the existence of our spooky friends. I think almost everyone knows one person or another who has either encountered or knows someone that has a tale to spin. A true ghost hunter needs a few tools of trade to start his expedition into the paranormal unknown.

1. A simple digital thermometer is very important since a spectral presence has a significant impact on the surrounding environment. A decrease in several degrees in a specific spot can be a key indicator that something ghostly is within close proximity.

2. Next both a video camera, and a common camera (35 mm recommended) can be used to catch a spirit on film or video. This task is a little more difficult since most ghosts never make their physical presence a visual experience. Sometimes it can be possible to catch something in a mere shutter of the camera or in a flicker of video, and they are usually very unnoticeable unless you carefully scrutinize the film or footage taken. Orbs appear as globular circles found in photos, but are quite frequently discounted to environmental or light causing anomalies. I have captured such things in several photos, and of twelve of my best photos only one could be explained by a local photo specialist. Video is less likely in catching a spook posing, but you may capture strange noises, occasional blurs, or if your lucky some manifestation causing moving objects like doors or chairs.

3. Another tool in ghost hunting is an Electro Magnetic Field Meter, used to measure electromagnetic changes in a specific area. The EMF meter is sometimes also called a Gauss meter, does have some drawbacks since it is very sensitive to any other electrical devices like cell phones. On any of my hunts I have done my investigation in two stages; one with a flashlight camera, and an EMF, and another with other equipment that may cause false readings.

4. A good tape recorder can be used to capture things like bumps, footsteps or my favorite phenomenon the holy grail of ghost hunting: E.V.P. (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). E.V.P. was made famous by the movie White Noise, and is an actual recording of spirits communicating from the dead.

5. Last but not least, you need to use your eyes, ears and other vital senses. During a midnight visit to Leap Castle In Ireland, I didn’t have my other tools but I was able to detect a hideous odor in one of the hallways, and later on I could hear footsteps, and various other noises.

So if you’re not afraid of the dark, and you have the constant pang of curiosity about what lies beyond the world of the living; than my friend you have the makings of a ghost hunter. There are millions of websites with good locations, and some are found just by talking to the locals when visiting a new town. I have never actually seen a ghost, but I have had a lot of spooky fun in my searches, and a few unexplainable experiences to go along with them. Good luck, be careful, respect the law, don’t go alone, and make sure someone knows where you are going, and most important of all: BOO!

Orbs are all the rage today. All the young kids are doing it oh, wait, the kids are doing something else. Ah, yes Orbs everybody has one. Well, you likely do if you are trying to take photos of ghosts. Check out any website that claims to have ghost hunter associated with it and you’ll find pictures of orbs.

These orbs are supposed to be the beginning manifestation of a ghost. Unfortunately these ghosts never get past that stage. That’s a little odd, isn’t it? You would think that after all this time and all the photos that have been taken we might see a full blown ghostie but no all we get are orbs.

The big question is, what is an orb? I can’t help but think that all these ghost chasing are deluding themselves with the idea that these orbs are the sign of a ghost. Come on people, I know that you have a need to get some kind of positive result while you are ghost hunting but this is just the silliest thing. It’s dust! Plain and simple, dust.

The problem is that the hunters have a vested interest in what happens when they are in the field. They need some kind of so called proof in order to convince themselves that they are finding ghosts so that they can continue their little hobby. Maybe they should try coin collecting if they need a hobby that badly.

I have seen photos in which there are billions of these orbs and people claim that this is some kind of portal between this world and the next. What I see is a bunch of dust reflecting the light from the cameras flash.

What is odd also is the fact that this whole orb business has only come about due to the advent of digital cameras. Regular 35mm cameras did not seem to produce these orb images. A curious thought that. Why would older cameras not catch these orbs? I give up.

While I am curious about ghosts and experiments that might prove their existence I have no time for these orb photos. The photo takers are convincing themselves of something that just does not exist. Its dust and only dust but they can make pretty pictures.

Death of a Ghost Hunter (2007)

Starring: Patti Tindall, Mike Marsh, Davina Joy, and Lindsay Page

Director: Sean Tretta

Rating: Eight of Ten Stars

Professional ghost hunter Carter Simms (Tindall) is hired to lead a three-day investigation at a house where a preacher and his family perished twenty years ago in what appeared to be a brutal murder/suicide. Together with videographer Colin Green (Marsh) and journalist Yvette Sandoval (Joy), and joined at the last minute by the enigmatic fundamentalist Christian Mary Young Mortenson (Page), she sets out to locate and document any evidence of ghostly activity. What she finds will shock her. What she doesn’t find will kill her.

“Death of a Ghost Hunter” is an expertly crafted ghost movie that manages to both hold to the traditions of the genre while also delivering unexpected surprises. It’s a movie that will satisfy those in the audience who are interested in the “science” of ghost hunting (as portrayed in the “Ghost Hunters” television series or by guests on late-night talkshow “Coast to Coast AM), as well as those who are just looking for a well-done supernatural thriller.

The exceptional quality of the film starts from a foundation of a good script that not only presents a solid story, but which is written so well that each character in the film has a unique way of speaking, making them and the entire situation that much more believeable. The actors all give top-notch, natural-seeming performances, taking the strengths of the script and amplifying them. Acting-wise, there isn’t a moment in the film that doesn’t seem real and a character that doesn’t have believeable reactions to events.

That’s not to say this is a perfect movie. There are some core elements to the plot that I find questionable-elements I can’t comment on without spoiling some of the film’s big surprises-because I find it hard to believe that even in a small town some of the circumstances surrounding the death of the preacher wouldn’t come to light during the police investigation in 1982. (There are also what appears to be plot problems as the film unfolds, but thsoe are intentional and they start to make sense as the pieces of the mystery surrounding the haunting begin to come together.)

But, most of the problems with the film don’t rise far beyond the level of nitpicking. In fact, it compares favorably to recent big Hollwood ghost movies that took months and hundreds of thousands of dollars to make, even though “Death of a

The Beginner’s Guide to Ghost-hunting

Ghost hunting is a difficult venture to undertake. From dealing with problems of society’s skepticism (a CNN study shows only 33% of Americans believe in ghosts) to actually tracking and capturing or eliminating a phantasm, there is a lot that the amateur ghost hunter must learn. Most guides in bookstores are written as “fiction” or simply not nearly informative enough. In order to explore the world of ghost hunting, one must first understand what a ghost is.

“Ghost Fact-sheet”

1. Ghosts, by and large, have NO NATURAL PREDATORS. This means that ghost population growth has been relatively unrestricted since ghost hunts and witch hunts were outlawed in the mid 1700s. Ghosts are now predicted to outpace other segments of the population and become the largest minority in the United States by 2017.

2. Ghosts are indestructible and are largely composed of dark matter. Since destroying a ghost is impossible, and scaring one is out of the question, ghosts must be persuaded to leave their “Haunts” (their migratory living spaces) by means of deception or bribery. Hence the common ghost hunting term, “Trick or Treat”.

3. Although over 9,000 reports of possession are reported each year, over 28% of these cases are falsified, and 71% are demonic, not phantasmal, possession. Thus, don’t spend your ghost hunting resources on possession cases, as you are largely unequipped to take down the higher of the Order of the Nightmaren.

Quick facts, although useful, will not a ghost hunter make. Yes, one must understand one’s enemy, but this will only go so far. Remember that, being nearly invisible (ghosts reflect ultraviolet and infrared radiation), ghosts could be watching you at any moment. Even now, a wraith is observing your study of this guide, and is preparing counter measures. Don’t be surprised to enter your next Haunt with an EM-Gage, just to find the target ghost has prepared an Anti-EM Radio field to counteract your equipment. You have been warned.

Do note that, despite popular belief, ghosts cannot physically harm you. Of the millions of Haunts that occur each year, only several hundred result in injury. Even then, most of these injuries are self-inflicted, and are caused when a terrified victim trips or falls while evading the ghost. That said, always face a ghost with proper head and elbow protection. Even the most stalwart of ghost hunters can be overcome with fright as they lay eyes on an otherworldly manifestation

I have been ghost hunting for over 15 years, started the ParaResearch Foundation in 1998 and currently am the Director of Cincinnati Area Paranormal Existence Research (CAPER). One of the consistence questions I get from clients is about "strange" activity that occurs in their bathrooms. We’re not talking about plumbing problems or the latest decorating trends. What we are talking about is the "feeling of being watched, hearing strange noises or seeing shadow figures. For these people the question is: Why are their bathroom scary?

Well, there can be a few things that may account for your jumpiness around the bathroom. Mirrors reflect subtle movements that may have escaped your notice, drippy pipes creating odd noises, odd smells (I’m talking pipes here, not the more…obvious sniffs), etc.

Most activity can be explained by natural causes, not supernatural, so identify where the problem lies and if you still find no reasonable explanation for your uneasiness, start taking notes (when/where/weather conditions/who’s in the house). If you decide to investigate with a ghost hunting team later, this information will be invaluable.

Also, the close quarters in some bathrooms and what electrical equipment that is being used: hairdryer, curling iron etc. These items can elevate the emf fields (electromagnetic field). If you are sensitive to high emf fields this could account for you uneasiness in the bathroom.

One last word – another theory is a connection between the fluidity of water and that of spirit activity. It’s possible that the water concentrated in the bathroom may serve as a conduit between you and the ghosts. This could make you more susceptible to their presence.
